What is a 6-Layer PCB?
A 6-layer PCB (Printed Circuit Board) is a type of multilayer board that consists of six conductive copper layers laminated together with insulating material in between each layer. The six layers are usually arranged in a specific order to optimize signal integrity, power delivery, and electromagnetic compatibility.

The manufacturing process for a 6-layer PCB involves several steps, each requiring precision and attention to detail. The main stages of 6-layer PCB manufacturing are:
1. Design and Preparation
The first step in 6-layer PCB manufacturing is to design the board using EDA (Electronic Design Automation) software. The designer creates a schematic diagram and a PCB layout, which includes the component placement, routing, and layer stackup. The design files are then sent to the PCB manufacturer for review and preparation.
2. Material Selection and Cutting
The manufacturer selects the appropriate base material for the 6-layer PCB, typically FR-4 (Flame Retardant 4) laminate. The laminate is cut to the required size using a high-precision CNC machine.
3. Inner Layer Printing and Etching
The inner layers (Signal Layer 1, Power Layer, and Signal Layer 2) are printed onto the laminate using a photolithographic process. The Copper-Clad Laminate is coated with a light-sensitive resist, which is then exposed to UV light through a photomask containing the layer artwork. The unexposed resist is removed, and the exposed copper is etched away using a chemical solution, leaving the desired circuit pattern.
4. Lamination
The etched inner layers are aligned and stacked with prepreg (pre-impregnated) sheets between each layer. The stackup is then placed in a lamination press, where heat and pressure are applied to bond the layers together, forming a solid multilayer board.
5. Drilling and Plating
After lamination, the board is drilled using a CNC drilling machine to create through-holes and vias that connect the layers electrically. The drilled holes are then plated with copper to establish electrical connections between the layers.
6. Outer Layer Printing and Etching
The outer layers (Top Layer and Bottom Layer) are printed and etched using the same photolithographic process as the inner layers. This step also includes applying the soldermask and silkscreen to protect the board and provide component identification.
7. Surface Finish Application
A surface finish, such as HASL (Hot Air Solder Leveling), ENIG (Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold), or OSP (Organic Solderability Preservative), is applied to the exposed copper pads to protect them from oxidation and enhance solderability.
8. Electrical Testing and Inspection
The finished 6-layer PCB undergoes electrical testing and visual inspection to ensure that it meets the required specifications and quality standards. This may include flying probe testing, automatic optical inspection (AOI), and X-ray inspection.
